Mrs. Shanta Madiman is my wonderful aunt, who had been so regular in writing letters to us ever since I was in school. Always looking for a reason to appreciate every small success of ours as we grew up, Shanti Mami's (as I called her) letter would arrive with loads of praise, a word of advice, and always a thought or two about our well-being - and whatever she would write, would be straight from her heart! I am sure all my cousins would agree with me how we would eagerly look forward to receiving a letter from her. Even in her old age, she continues to write, inspite of a considerable pain, whenever an occasion demands.
Last week when I visited them, she handed over a hand written article, with a request to improve it and have it published wherever suitable. I found the article interesting and thought-provoking, so I worked on it to tweak it just a little bit here and there and submitted it to the reputed website, Tickled by life.
Do read the article here!,

Very nice article Gopi...timely reminder of timeless values. But, is anyone interested these days? Greed ad got the gut of most, as auntie has observed.
Off to see your Aunt's post sir:)
and she sounds like a wonderful ,thinking independent lady:)
Juts read yesterday about Usha's father:)and his enthusiasm for new technology at the age of 70 and how he emails his daughter at 74..:)
and now I read about yur aunt..it is an inspiration..:)
Thanks you for sharing:)
Very well written...Gone are those days when children were respectful etc....Greed and individualism have taken over...Children learn from elders and if our elders (eg. politicians who are supposed to set an example) behave the way they do, how does one expect the young to behave any better?
Oh how i miss those hand written letters!! I am impressed by your aunt and i must say she is an inspiration to the younger generation! Kuddos to her. :)
Great article by your Aunt, Gopinathji! Today's youngsters would do well to listen to her words.
Re: super brain yoga- A fellow blogger- Nikhil- has also written about it here- http://scienceofhinduism.blogspot.com/2009/03/thoppukaranam-alias-super-brain-yoga.html
interesting to get a perspective through the eyes of a senior Indian !
and she is so rightfully pointing some of the vices and unnecessary behaviours we youth have indulged in...
Wow! That is really wonderful!
Congratulation, to the Gentle Lady too :) Very inspiring too, this is.
Now am off to read the article!
very nice article and very well presented.....first thing, i like her spirit of enthu to put her thoughts into those nice words to share with us! My grandmother too used to speak very good english....and she never studied it formally! I miss her and the article reminded me of her....Thanks very much...convey my best regards to your aunt!
Gopi,
Universal and Timeless wisdom, I must say.
Should we say we were fortunate to get a small part of their attitude and approach to life.
Nice article Shanta pachi.
Ah! It runs in the family! Although people are always complaining about young generations values, I found her writing very compelling!
Gopi, please convey to auntie that I share her concern. But she need not despair, for I am still very old fashioned. In fact, if I may pat my back, I have "satisfaction, hard work and honesty" (except perhaps, hardwork :)
I wonder what auntie would say about my photoblog.
Hey, Mavin did you say 'pachi'...coool man, for that is what we called our aunties before we switched to the easier chikki.
I read her article. Thanks for sharing. This is such a wonderful write up. We talk about new age women and then there is one actually who belongs to golden era and more courageous and independent than many today.
